Blackpool Central Library

For fifteen weeks over the summer of 2011, Rainbow Glass Studios were consumed in making eight windows for a major refurbishment of the Victorian library in celebration of its centenary. Thanks to the initial idea by Steve Gomersall, the architect Adam Strudwick (Bisset Adams Architects) commissioned Artist Nick Robertson to design the windows with ideas and input from Blackpool Library staff and library users lead by Anne Ellis (Head of Libraries). Rainbow Glass Studios were then commissioned to deliver these amazing designs, bringing them to life in the form of 500 square feet of glass to become a permanent feature of the library for the next hundred years…. and beyond.

We employed a wide range of techniques, old and new including screen printed glass, hand painted glass & enameled finishes, fused glass, traditional leaded glass, silver leaf mirror (verre eglomise), sandblasted and etched glass. Each window measures 3 meters high by 2 meters wide and is set in a metal frame. All techniques are permanent and will last for hundreds more years.

We are proud to have been part of this exciting refurbishment project and hope these windows will be an inspiration to the public and library users alike.
